Flowers & fashion. Two of my favorite things. Oh and how South Coast Plaza weaves the art of gardening with fashion and decor, exquisite of course. Lucky me, I got a sneak peak behind the scenes tour of the set up for the 2017 Southern California Spring Garden Show today all thanks to my pal Lisa. At Home In The Garden, as it is so appropriately named, was exactly how I felt today.
It’s South Coast Plaza’s 50th anniversary and they are celebrating with colorful hippos and mannequins donning botanicals for their main garden feature in the center of Crystal Court. I was told they had these hippos at their grand opening 50 years ago! Fiesta Parade Floats creates this exhibit each year and they do many of the Rose Parade floats as well so you can just imagine the time and detail that goes into it.
The garden models were being dressed today with colorful flowers as the runway was being filled with greenery and orchids.
If I were ever to walk the red carpet, I’d want to wear this garden gown.
Other exhibits were also well on their way, as landscapers joined forces with the retailers to create a wonderland of outdoor spaces. Like this bohemian retreat created by The Potting Shed by Carlisle along with Williams-Sonoma. The vintage decor and aviary is going to be fabulous!
One of my favorite designers, Camille Beehler Landscape Design, is back again this year partnering with Crate & Barrel. Always love her clean modern metal look, combined with succulents and nature.
Although this year, there is a lot more color bursting throughout the show. Gardens mirroring fashion, or is it the other way around? This children’s garden, designed by Table 2 Garden, appropriately partnered with Land of Nod to create this playground. Using corrugated steel for tunnels (powder coated bright blue) and recycled tires shredded and dyed for colorful mulch, I couldn’t get my four-year old to leave. He must of asked the designers about 30 times if they were done yet.
There’s lots more to see, this is just a teaser. I can’t wait to see Dustin Gimbel’s exhibit (Second Nature Garden Design) with Sur La Table and Grass Roots’ moss wall is gong to look amazing!
I’m back Friday with my garden wagon in tow and my shopping list of tillandsia, a small Japanese Maple and an outdoor pillow from West Elm.
The show starts tomorrow, Thursday, April 27 through Sunday, April 30. Don’t miss it, I never do.
